Balcony decor ideas

Your balcony is your own personal outdoor oasis where you can enjoy some fresh air and take in the stunning views – whether that’s of your city skyline or of a beautiful natural landscape. But what if your balcony feels more like a bland and boring space? If you’re in need of some balcony decor inspiration, you’ve come to the right place!

As an interior designer, I’ve helped many clients transform their outdoor spaces into beautiful and inviting areas. Here are some of my favourite balcony decor ideas that are sure to breathe new life into your own space.

1. Bring in Some Greenery

One of the easiest ways to transform your balcony is to bring in some greenery. Not only will plants add some colour and life to the space, but they can also help to create a more relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.

If you’re not sure which plants are best for your balcony, talk to your local nursery or garden centre. They’ll be able to advise you on which varieties will do well in your specific environment and how to care for them.

2. Add Some Comfortable Furniture

Your balcony should be a space where you can relax and unwind, so make sure to include some comfortable furniture. A few chairs and a small table are all you need to create a cozy seating area.

If you’re short on space, consider investing in some folding furniture that can be easily stored away when not in use. Or, for a truly unique look, try repurposing some old pieces that you might have around your home.

3. Create a Cozy Reading Nook

One of my favourite ways to use a balcony is to create a cozy reading nook. This is the perfect spot to curl up with your favourite book and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

To create a reading nook, start by finding a comfortable chair or sofa. Then, add a small table and lamp for reading in the evenings. Lastly, throw in a few cozy blankets and pillows to make it extra inviting.

4. Hang Up Some String Lights

String lights are a simple and easy way to add some extra style and ambiance to your balcony. They’re also relatively inexpensive, so you can experiment with different looks without breaking the bank.

For a classic look, try hanging up some white string lights. Or, for something a little more festive, opt for coloured lights in shades like green or red. You can even find string lights that come in fun shapes like stars or flowers.

5. Add a Splash of Colour

One of the quickest and easiest ways to decorate your balcony is to add a splash of colour. This can be done with everything from paint and wallpaper to cushions and rugs.

If you’re not sure which colours to choose, take a cue from your surroundings. For example, if you have a beautiful view of the ocean, you might want to use some blue and green hues in your decor. Or, if your balcony faces a city skyline, you could go for a more urban look with greys and blacks.

6. Display Some Artwork

Your balcony is the perfect place to show off your favourite artwork. Whether you choose to hang up paintings or display sculptures, adding some art to your space will instantly make it feel more personal and unique.

When picking out artwork for your balcony, make sure to choose pieces that are weather-resistant. Otherwise, you’ll need to bring them inside whenever it rains or snows.

7. Include a Water Feature

Another great way to add some visual interest to your balcony is to include a water feature. This could be anything from a small fountain to a fish pond. Not only will a water feature add a touch of luxury to your space, but it can also help to create a more relaxing atmosphere.

If you decide to go with a fish pond, make sure to do your research beforehand. There are a few extra considerations you’ll need to take into account, such as making sure the pond is deep enough and adding a filter to keep the water clean.

8. Decorate with Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to make a small balcony feel larger and more open. They also help to reflect light, which can make your space feel brighter and more inviting.

When choosing mirrors for your balcony, make sure to pick ones that are weather-resistant. You’ll also want to avoid hanging them too high, as they could blow away in strong winds.

9. Add Some Privacy

If you’re looking for ways to make your balcony feel more like an extension of your home, then adding some privacy is a great option. This can be done in a few different ways, such as hanging up curtains or planting some privacy screens.

Hanging up curtains is one of the quickest and easiest ways to add privacy to your balcony. Just make sure to choose curtains that are made from weather-resistant materials.

Planting privacy screens is another great option, but it will take a bit more time and effort to get them established. Once they’re grown, they’ll provide you with long-lasting privacy and can also help to block out noise.

10. Keep It Simple

When it comes to balcony decor, sometimes less is more. If your space is on the small side or you’re not sure where to start, then keeping it simple is always a good option.

A few well-chosen pieces of furniture, some greenery, and a few personal touches are all you need to create a beautiful and inviting space. Just remember to focus on quality over quantity, and your balcony is sure to be a space you’ll enjoy for years to come.
